Inside of the Edges and Lines: fumiko imano's twin peeked into the Valextra's atelier.
This exhibition is the world premiere of a new artwork by artist fumiko imano, created in collaboration with Valextra, a luxury leather goods brand founded in Milan, Italy in 1937, from photographs taken in their atelier.
The artist describes the photographs in which the twins and their friendly animals appear as "real" moments captured in the same way as a family picture. Capturing the moment when a handbag is designed through the accumulation of individual traditional processes, it is a highly documentary work of craftsmanship. At the same time, the edges of the cut and collaged photographs, which we might otherwise miss without noticing, reveal a world of another dimension, confronting us with the fluctuations of reality. The edges flow as a line, overlapping with the "Costa," the most distinctive of Valextra's signatures that finesses all its products, denoting the handwork of the artisan who applies a unique formula of black ink to finesse the edges of the leather.
In this exhibition, fumiko imano's artwork, which will be installed amidst a variety of artisanal tools and furniture used in the brand's Milanese atelier, is not merely "making things," but with a private gaze the artist peeps into the inner lives of the artisans to deconstruct the engineer's spirit and handcraft story in a non-conventional way.
