Ronan Bouroullec: On Creative Session

HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE, a brand founded on the technology of garment pleating that designs and makes everyday wear, looks at the exploratory approach behind the brand's creative process. With this approach, for the first time the brand's design team engaged in a collaborative project, "Creative Session," with designer / artist Ronan Bouroullec. This is a process through which the design team and Bouroullec explored the core nature and synergy between each other's work. The design team immersed themselves in the world of Bouroullec's drawings where they explored elements of color, form, and the movement found in his pen strokes, integrating them into clothes-making.

This exhibition looks at the background of the creative session to examine the exchange between the design team and Bouroullec, through exhibits of both drawings and clothes-making. Demonstrating how the garments were developed from idea to realization, it presents the drawings in forms of both originals and videos, and the garments grouped by techniques, with prototypes and videos of their manufacturing. In addition, a film on Bouroullec reflecting on this creative session illustrates how the design team engaged with the poetry found in his drawings and translated it into various clothing designs.

What has become clear—over the course of this adventure to create something unprecedented—is the connections between, if not the integration of, the two creative fields at play.
